Dinner worked out well yesterday

Sunday, March 31st, 2002

Dinner worked out well yesterday evening - nobody died, and even I, picky
person that I can be, thought it was nice! Thai beef curry that is. Probably
one of the easier things to start with from a cooking point of view, since
you can’t really go wrong by following the recipe, but it did take about
3 1/2 hours to prepare and cook, so that IS something in my favour. And it
was a dinner for eight, so I should be able to handle anything smaller in
future…. :-)

I’ve been advised that for my starting efforts at cooking for guests, I should
start with chicken, stuffed with brie, and wrapped with bacon. So says my
chef friend Serena anyway!

Have moved into the new apartment - and I’m very happy :-) There’s plenty
of space to live, and it’s nice and clean, and it’s a suitable place to
invite friends to visit!

I’ve just got GPRS working on my Ericsson T68 through Vodaphone! :-) This is pretty cool… and it’s a trial period so it’s pretty cheap
(read free).

An article entitled Linux for the rest of
us
describes the evolution of OS/2 and Windows over a number of years, and
the eventual death of OS/2 despite the hopes and wishes of many faithful fans.
Some amusing paragraphs, including:

Indeed, Windows 3.0 quickly became known for the initials “UAE.”
These stood for “Unrecoverable Application Error,” which is what the pop-up box
proclaimed when Windows was just about to crash. It meant the system had gone
haywire due to a lack of cooperation — even if only one program, typically
Word for Windows, was running — and that any work done since the last time it
was saved to disk was now about to be lost. Perhaps the most maddening thing
about it was the sheer audacity of the little “OK” box: The computer would sit
there and do nothing until the user clicked on this box, whereupon the computer
would go ahead and finish crashing, now with the user’s permission. There was a
cottage industry of hacking the code so that the box would have an icon of an
upraised middle finger, instead of the Windows alarm icon, and considerably
different wording than that supplied by Microsoft, now along the lines that the
user had just been screwed by Windows, which was now going to destroy some
data.

Actually, they think this referendum will be narrowly defeated. Only a few
thousand votes either way, depending on how the Galway constituency turns
out!!

Abortion referendum reports coming in…

Thursday, March 7th, 2002

Abortion referendum reports coming in… Cork has just voted no, I think it
was 50.5% to 49.5% or thereabouts. I thought earlier on today that it looked
like the result would be a no vote overall, but the yes votes seem to be
higher in general outside Dublin.
