Clueless article of the week

eWEEK

I bet this gets linked to a lot. Clueless articles often do! Who wrote this? Why are they letting somebody who obviously knows nothing of the divisions between kernel-space and user-space give a review of the LIMITATIONS of the upcoming 2.6 kernel, including some things which firstly do not belong in the kernel at all, and secondly are ALREADY AVAILABLE - pam_ldap and nss_ldap of course.

XML.com: Make Your XML RDF-Friendly [Oct. 30, 2002]
Interesting. I’ve seen this article today, as well as another (where is it now - ah here) whose author had gotten tired of RDF. Actually, mainly the XML syntax of RDF.
I have little to say just yet as a relative beginner in the world of RDF, even if we did to a formal methods analysis of the RDF data model in a 4th Year college course. What kind of formal methods analysis? This kind.

Cross-platform GUI bindings for Java!

SWT, XML Put True Cross-platform GUIs Within Reach

SWT… sounds nice! It’s the kind of implementation I tend to prefer - hence my prior interest in wxPython. I’m not a Java WORA purist I guess - and anyway that idea has resulted in GUIs which (for the most part) sucked. Swing is the reason why I say blah when confronted with a chance to write a GUI app in Java.

Birthday “celebration” of growing older will take place here (Santry, near the airport) on December 14 :-) Need 10+ people, but that shouldn’t be a problem, surely?

Next year’s ski trip :-)

Netsoc: Events: Ski Trip 2003

Ski trip 2003 is under development. Ski trip #3 one might say. Livigno is a wonderful little village. Actually it’s three villages in one, though I misremember their names at the moment. And usually they have pretty good snow in early-mid March. In 2001 the snow was PERFECT! Not so good last year lower down, but still up on the higher slopes there was some fun skiing.
And Livigno has a great nightlife and cheap alcohol (that doesn’t make a difference to me of course ;-) Can I believe that I’m going to Livigno again for the third year rather than trying somewhere else? Ah, not changing what works - it’s hard to beat Livigno for a combination of price, good nightlife and reasonable quality accomodation.

Real opens source but keeps its crown jewels

Real are going to open the base for their multimedia system today. There are a number of options created with this. Small devices are one obvious area where Real would like their formats to become ubiquitous.
The licensing terms are not very onerous, and the patent grants are reasonable from what I can see. In comparison with Quicktime and Windows Media, this is incredibly open, and is worthwhile looking at. I do hope that the patent grants are not revocable, that would be a stumbling block.
There is always Ogg Vorbis, of course. But in the commercial world it has not been gaining much traction so far. There is no reason to ignore Ogg - there is plenty of room for both systems. And many people will not consider the Real option to be free enough - it has its place. Could it become a leading contender in the general world? I don’t think so - not so much from technical as from sociological issues. As usual :-)

We don’t see things as they are, we see them as we are.

We don’t see things as they are, we see them as we are.

That was a quote from a mail I got in work - and it reminds me of an entry I almost wrote last week before %@^% it was eaten. About the Nice Treaty, and why I voted yes.
A large part of that almost-entry was about how people filter events through their own particular perception of reality, and a rejection of the treaty by Ireland changes the perception of many people. I think that strangely enough, the bigger changes to Ireland would have come from that change in perception rather than the changes which will occur due to the Nice Treaty.
Admittedly I’ve only gotten to page 15 in reading the treaty - bad considering that I’ve already voted! Nothing to make me think I’ve made a horrible mistake yet though…

O’Reilly Network: Blogging Mailing Lists [October 28, 2002]

A feature suggestion for spaces - post to weblogs as well as mailing lists. Actually - knowing Diego, this is probably already planned…
Okay, it IS planned! Well - “improved integration” - sounds very like this, don’t you think?
