7 Fallacies of Distributed Computing

By Peter Deustch:

  • The network is reliable
  • Latency is zero
  • Bandwidth is infinite
  • The network is secure
  • Topology doesn’t change
  • There is one administrator
  • Transport cost is zero

As talked about elsewhere, this means that message passing is a much better paradigm for distributed computing than RPC.

Interesting, good point. Do you have a reference for that? L. Peter Deutsch seems to have been saying interesting stuff for forty years now, which is quite the achievement.

Oh, there’s a cool interview with him at http://devlinux.org/deutsch-interview.html .
