Erlang Productivity

Ulf_Wiger.pdf (application/pdf Object)

I remember we did a network programming project in Erlang during Third Year. It was actually really fun, and I thought it was a very nice language. Pity it doesn’t show up in too many other places…

Maybe functional languages should be more prevalent than they are…

adaptive path » the value of experience

This is really really nice! Look at the HTML - mostly just semantic markup. And then the page looks really nice. And even better, try printing the page - it prints out well, and is laid out in a completely different way (but better for reading).

Want to see a description of some of the benefits?

I’m still struggling to persuade some people I know that writing pages to work with Netscape 4 (and older) browsers is mucho struggle for little gain at this stage - and you pollute your markup to such a large degree! But the theory is that as long as people use Netscape 4, it has to be supported. I’m thinking of buying Zeldman’s book to help with my arguments, but… will it help?

Miyazaki article

Salon.com Arts & Entertainment | Wizard of light and shadow

My first Miyazaki film was Princess Mononoke or Mononoke Hime, which was a great film - great visuals, and a very good (but not top-class) story. Very obviously a pro-environmental piece, it’s very worthwhile to see.

I also had a look at Spirited Away or Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi, a much more accessible film to the general Western public. Though my younger brother really liked them both :-) The former film feels deeper and has a bigger story to tell, but is not as accessible. Both are really good to watch though (English dubs are good, but you really need to see both subtitled).

JDO is interesting and Castor is crap? Apparently…
Glad to see people are checking them out anyway rather then rolling their own…
Wonder how JBoss’s persistence stuff compares. But I think people want a lightweight system that they can plug into “just servlets”, right?

Hibernate - just been pointed out to me. Comments to be added…

4 July photos coming soon… assuming they’re not bad… ahem!

And Amsterdam photos too perhaps - who knows :-)
Weather forecast isn’t too good for tomorrow, but it’s a family event down in Wexford anyway - and I do love the sea.

Ben Goodger on Mozilla Firebird

millennium | weblog [Date Archives]

A big thumbs up here for the future direction to be taken by the Mozilla organisation, especially once they move more stuff into shared code in the GRE, so that I can run Thunderbird at the same time without major memory issues…

Ben Goodger quote:

We have wanted this for a long time. For years, in fact. We are proud of Firebird, we have aggressive plans for developing and marketing it. We feel Mozilla has wallowed in the shadows of obscurity and irrelevance for too long, and are actively working towards a future where we present a viable alternative browser for millions of computer users around the world.
